One month in a nutshell

It has been over a month since the last time I blogged. Oops! So here is what has been going on in my life lately:

Job interview

I interviewed for a job in early June that sounded really amazing. I didn’t end up advancing to the next round but got some feedback from the company. The only reason they didn’t ask me to come back was that I was too similar in personality and skills to someone already working there. The team is pretty small so they wanted someone who is different and who would complement the others’ skills and personalities. Sucks to be me I guess! They did say I should keep in touch and encouraged me to apply again should another position open up, so that’s what I will be doing. I seem to have the worst luck with jobs here. Last year I missed out on a great opportunity because they needed someone to start a month before I could. I’m still a little disappointed about that one, and these two jobs were probably the most promising ones I have seen here. I will have to keep trying but the truth is there isn’t that much out there and I don’t really have the time to apply for any and every job.

N. and I finally decided on where to go during our week off in July. Aviemore it is. Aviemore is in Cairngorms National Park, an area of the Highlands that looks absolutely beautiful. I am really looking forward to it. We are planning to do lots of walks and hire bikes for a day or two as well. From what we’ve read it sounds like there is so much to do and I hope it will be a great time away from everyday life. It will also be our first proper holiday after nearly 2 1/2 years together. About time!

Weight loss

I have put on a lot of weight in the past year. I snack a lot at work and don’t have much time and energy to work out in the evenings, because I get home so late with my 4 hours-a-day commute. I have been wanting to start being more healthy again, snack less and lose weight for weeks and months, but it just hasn’t been happening. It’s like there is that switch in my brain and it was just stuck. Because I haven’t been able to do it on my own, I decided to try Weight Watchers again. I’ve lost weight with Weight Watchers before, and I know that it works. This time I am trying to focus on maintaining a normal diet (i.e. not too many diet products, lots of healthy, real food), just like I did when I lost weight by tracking calories on MyFitnessPal, but I do go to the Weight Watchers meetings for the additional motivation and accountability. There is a meeting just a two minute walk from my apartment on Saturday mornings which is ideal for me. I first went two weeks ago, and since then I have lost 6.5 pounds. So far so good. I have loads more to lose but at least I’ve made a start.

Birthday weekend

It’s my birthday tomorrow, and N. and I are off work for a long weekend. Originally we were considering going away for this weekend but with our upcoming holiday, we decided it would just get a little too expensive to go away twice within a month. So we are just enjoying some time off work.

On Friday night we went to see a musical at the Edinburgh Playhouse, “Annie Get Your Gun”. We really enjoyed it and it was so nice to do something different for a change.

haircutI also had an appointment at the hair salon for a much needed hair cut. My hair had got a little long over the past months. I am always in two minds about it. On the one hand long hair can look really nice but on the other it can be so annoying. Especially because I rarely wear it in a ponytail anymore, now that I wear hearing aids, it can get a little hot when I cannot put up my hair in warm weather. I ended up having quite a bit chopped up but it’s not too short. You can see the result in the picture – I love it!

Today, I am meeting up with a friend who I haven’t seen in weeks and then N. and I are seeing “The Fault in Our Stars” tonight. I don’t think N. knows what he signed up for when he agreed to see this film, but I can’t wait. I read the book a while ago and I loved it!

We don’t have much planned for tomorrow, my actual birthday, although I think we may visit Rosslyn Chapel, which is supposed to be absolutely stunning. Let’s hope the weather cooperates.

N. goes back to work on Tuesday but I have the day off as I have a follow-up appointment about my hearing aids during the day. I will definitely write a post about my experience with my hearing aids soon. I have been wearing them for over a month now, and all in all my experience with them has been great and I am so glad I did this.

  1. Wooohoooo on your birthday plans and your commitment to getting back to a happier place weight wise. :) You have done it before and you can do it again. I think moving to a new country does come with a lot of new treats and it’s hard to say no sometimes:)
