In the recent years I’ve had rather mixed feelings about Christmas. Spending Christmas with my family was nice but it was always stressful as well, and it was bound to end in arguments at some point.
Two years ago, I ended up leaving on Christmas Eve and decided to spend the rest of the holidays by myself at my apartment. It was probably the worst Christmas I had ever had, and it left me dreading last year’s a little. N. came to Germany for 2 1/2 weeks over Christmas and we were going to spend Christmas with my family. He knew what had happened the previous year, and I think we were both a bit anxious about it. It all turned out fine in the end and last Christmas turned out much better than the year before.
This year, N. and I are spending the holidays in Scotland, and I couldn’t be more excited! I cannot even explain how excited I am. I think it is the fact that it will be our first Christmas together in our apartment, just the two of us. I never used to bother with Christmas decorations in my previous apartments, as I was never there for Christmas, but this year I am planning to go all out.
I can’t wait to decorate our apartment for Christmas. I am looking forward to getting our first Christmas tree together and putting it up in our living room, to make the apartment all festive and cosy for the holidays.
Last year, we went to the Christmas market in Nuremberg, and, knowing that we would be living together for Christmas this year, we also popped into the Kathe Wohlfahrt shop to browse their Christmas decorations. We ended up buying some Christmas tree decorations, and started our first box of Christmas decorations.
When we were in Germany last week, we went into the Kathe Wohlfahrt shop in Heidelberg. Ironically, I had never gone in there in all the years I lived there, so this was both my and N.s first time in the shop. I never realised how big it was, it’s like an entire house where it is always Christmas. We got some more Christmas tree decorations, but we still have a long way to go until we have a full tree’s worth of decoration.
It’s quite unusual, I normally never get that excited about Christmas, and I never get into the Christmas spirit that early. I mean, It’s only October. But this year, I really cannot wait for the Christmas season to begin. In fact, I might just start it early.
I am also looking forward to spending the Christmas season in Edinburgh, to see all the Christmas lights everywhere, go to the Christmas market, and bake Christmas cookies. (Wish me luck!) Last year, I missed out on the Christmas market as I did not visit Edinburgh at all after the end of November – although I did see the Christmas Tree at Jenners!
The other week I found out that my holidays for the week of Christmas have been approved, so both N. and I will be off work for a whole week over Christmas.
Are you looking forward to Christmas? What is your favorite thing to do in the Christmas season?
