Our garden – a work in progress

We – and when I say we, I mean mostly N. – have been doing a lot of work on our garden.

Yes, we live in an apartment that comes with a little garden and we consider ourselves quite lucky. As we live on the first floor, it’s not quite as easy as opening the backdoor and stepping out into your garden, but it’s great that we have it anyway.

N. moved into the apartment at the end of 2011, but he didn’t do much with it until I moved here. While he did mow the lawn regularly, it was overgrown with weeds and moss, and there was hardly any actual grass. The wooden shed and fence had never been painted and didn’t look that nice after many years of being exposed to the elements

We (and again, I mean mostly N.) decided to paint the fence and shed. Fow relatively little money, that made a huge difference in the garden, as it looked so much nicer right away.

Then we (N.) set upon the task of de-weeding and de-mossing the lawn. I don’t think either of us really knew what we got ourselves into. We bought some weed killer and a hand scarifier, and N. started the long and laborious task of ridding the lawn of all unwanted weeds. I really cannot take any credit for this as it was N. who spent hours upon hours in the garden, scarifying and collecting all the moss with the result that after a week or two, our garden was a big brown patch with hardly any grass left. It wasn’t pretty and we seriously questioned whether it was a mistake to begin this in the first place.

The weekend of my birthday, N. sowed grass seeds, and after a few days the first blades of grass came out of the soil. After three weeks, the lawn finally looked good again. Not just good, but fantastic. It turned into an absolutely lovely, wonderfully green lawn. Our garden looked great with the lusciously green grass and so much better than just a few weeks earlier.

A couple of weeks ago, our neighbor bought himself a new garden furniture set in the sale. He offered us his old one. He had originally gotten it through Freecycle but it is seriously a fantastic set with an extendable table, chairs and a parasol. You can tell it must have been very expensive when it was newly bought, and I think it could last us for years to come.

It’s so nice having a meal out in the garden or just sitting outside and enjoying the good weather (although this week we’ve not had any), and I am hoping that we will get a barbecue soon, as they are on sale almost everywhere at the moment. I would love to have some friends over for a barbecue or just have one every now and then for just the two of us.

I am so excited to spend more time in the garden. Next year we are planning to do some more work on it, to plant flowers etc. I can’t wait.

We are not planning to live in this apartment forever, but why not make the best of it while we do?
