On the way to the UK

The past week has been so very stressful with me having to pack up everything that I am taking to the UK (sans the stuff I still need for the next month). I was finally done packing up everything yesterday and this morning all my stuff was picked up.

We loaded everything within 2 1/2 hours, and now the truck and all my stuff is on its way to the UK via Rotterdam. Everything worked out brilliantly, we loaded first thing in the morning and were done by 9:30 am.

You can’t imagine how relieved I am everything went well. We easily managed to fit everything into the truck (the top right picture shows the truck with everything loaded!), and I was able to take the couch, dining set, my dresser table, my shoe cabinet, two rugs, my bike and some other odds and ends. Plus 18 moving boxes full of stuff.

We are incredibly lucky that we had this opportunity, imagine all the money this is saving us. It’s amazing really. I think I managed to pack up nearly all of my stuff. I think I will have to ship 1–2 boxes next month (at €25 per box), and I am taking a suitcase with me when I fly over there at the end of March, but that is all. And when you consider it, that really isn’t much at all.

N. joked yesterday that if I change my mind now, he gets to keep my couch. Hah.

Now, if I can get that job sorted on Sunday, I am going to be in total bliss, although it does kind of sound too good to be true, doesn’t it? I mean, one person can only be so lucky.

Speaking of jobs, I had my yearly review yesterday and got nothing but good feedback from my supervisors. They are sad to see me go but said they would be completely supportive, even offering to have my letter of recommendation (we have them instead of references) translated.

Tomorrow I am flying to Edinburgh for the weekend, and now that everything with my stuff is sorted, I can really focus on that and look forward to it. Over the past few days, I was so preoccupied by this that I barely had time to think about it. It’s Valentine’s Day today, and I don’t get to spend it with my sweetie, but I will be with him tomorrow which is almost just as good.

My best friend turns 30 tomorrow and we’re going to celebrate her birthday in the evening. When you consider that her birthday is the only reason I am even going to be there this weekend, that’s another thing that’s sheer luck. I was going to go two weeks ago or last weekend (and flights would have been much cheaper too), but I decided to go this weekend so I could be there for her birthday, and now I have an interview on Sunday.

Things just seem to be falling into place. I know this also leaves the possibility for a big disappointment, but really, I never even thought I would be interviewing before I move next month, so I have already achieved more than I thought I would, even if things don’t work out, it’s kind of a success.

So please continue to keep your fingers crossed for me. You’ve all been doing a fantastic job of it so far.

  1. Fingers crossed for your interview. That would be AMAZING if that all comes together!!!! :) Go you! And yes, you saved a ton of money. I came from further away, but my shit still had to go on a boat and it wasn’t cheap. Again, you two are winning in the game of life there!

  2. That is an incredible deal on shipping. And it’s coming through my town! (not sure you can ship anything from Germany to the UK without going through Rotterdam though… ;) )

I hope things keep falling into place for you. But even if it doesn’t it can have a silver lining. For example, a job for me didn’t go through, but now that I’m unemployed I do have time to sort out some physical problems I’ve had for nine years. I need to go to physical therapy twice a week – which wouldn’t have been possible with a job in a different city – and I need to do exercises at home three times a day, which is also much easier to do when not employed. So keep up hope, even if things don’t turn out as planned, maybe they are still meant to be!

  3. That’s so awesome that you were able to pack all your stuff your like that without having to ship it all yourself – I can only imagine what all that would cost. Also, yay!!
