Since I decided to move to the UK this spring, I have been saving up money for the move. I am quitting my job at the end of March which means no income and – because I am resigning, not being laid off – no unemployment benefits either. N. is also prepared to support both of us for a while but I didn’t feel comfortable leaving without a penny in my pocket. So far I am quite happy with my savings. I was never very disciplined with saving up money, and I always had a list of things I wanted so if I ever had a big chunk of money left, I quickly spent it.
For a while now, I have been thinking that my laptop would need to be replaced soon. It’s a little over four years old, and while it works well enough for most things, it can be frustratingly slow. For a while now I have been wanting to get a large 22–24 inch screen for editing pictures but I knew it wouldn’t make sense to buy one before my move. I also feel like it would make no sense to get a large screen but then continue using my slow laptop.
I have gotten to the point where, in a month or two, I could probably buy everything at the top of my want list with my savings, but alas, I may need the money for more important things. When it comes down to it, I don’t absolutely need a new laptop or a large screen, I just want them.
Something else I want? An iPad. N. has an iPad and it’s fantastic. Most UK TV channels offer apps for streaming TV (BBC iPlayer for example) and it’s so convenient, even just for at home but even better for traveling. I would love having the ability to use the apps I love using on my iPhone, only on a bigger screen. I couldn’t do without a laptop for some things, but I do think the iPad would be my go-to device for checking email and browsing the internet at home. Of course this is not a need, just a big big want. But the sensible part of me has decided that the purchase of an iPad must be put off until I have a job in the UK.
I’m not going to lie, one of the main reasons I want to find a job quickly is so I can fulfill all of those wishes of mine very soon. I finally managed to save up the money so I hope I can put it toward something fun like a laptop and an iPad, not just boring (but essential) things like rent, food and a bus pass.
I know, I can’t believe I’m nearly 30 either. ;)
P.S. I’m not completely immature, I also want to use my savings to pay back my parents a big chunk of what I owe them because the sooner I am done paying back that loan, the better. So fingers crossed I will find a job for April or May at the latest.
